Remember back in the day? Back in the day when you could see Run DMC and LL Cool J rock the mic at the same show. Back when Mary J and Method Man shimmied on stage together while adding hooks to each other’s show. Back when rap was still new and fresh and its stars where on the cutting edge. I’m talking about boom boxes blasting over the shoulder, high top fades and premier hip hop artist filling venues on the regular. It’s a time that seems more legend than memory at this point. Run is a reverend, LL’s a TV cop and Mary J and Method are living off the past. Few kings and queens remain to carry the hip hop banner, and the number of high profile national rap tours can be counted on a man with no hand’s fingers. Yep, they say hip hop is dead or at the very least dying. That’s why I locked down my tickets to The Throne tour hitting Houston Dec. 5 today. Jay Z and his protégé Kanye are embarking on the last great rap tour, or perhaps the first depending on your perspective, of the millennium. Unmatchable egos, Jay Z’s effortless flow, Kanye’s beats and twisted genius; the reigning King of Rap is making it known one last time that he’s still the baddest from New York to Paris. His heir apparent Kanye is warning off the pretenders to the title and as always doing it his way. If you have the ability and don’t see this show you are not a hip hop fan. Love em or leave em these boys are about to take the nation’s rap audience to church one last time and I will be there with my Sunday best on.
