“Netflix & Chill” We all know what this means and how this usually ends, but this list isn’t for that version of Netflix & Chill. It’s for the nights when you don’t want run through the six with your woes, but instead for when you want to lay on the couch, drink a cold one and escape the typical “Turn Up” that happens every weekend.
Netflix is a great place to enjoy and pass time, but the only downside is spending countless hours to find the right movie to watch. Sometimes you give a movie a shot and find out 30 minutes into it that this movie is terrible. By then you’re aggravated and just give up entirely (this has happened to me numerous times). We’re here to alleviate your stress and forgo the entire search process; with our highly skilled crackdown team of Netflix specialists (which consists of one guy who has entirely way too much time on his hands). We’ve compiled 30 of the best movies on Netflix today, all ranging from recent box office hits, to stand up specials, to even some of the forgotten classics.
Chris Tucker LIVE!
Comedic Giant Chris Tucker bring his FIRST EVER stand up special to netflix, filmed in his hometown of Atlanta, He tells stories from his humble begins to his experiences in the big time. He shows his affection for the late great king of pop, Michael Jackson, and even does the hilarious MJ impersonation that we all got a kick out of in the “Rush Hour” movies. He speaks on his upbringing and being the youngest of six. Details what he desires in a woman and even tells a story of how Wesley Snipes offered to do his taxes. The special left me in tears at times and had me wondering one thing… “what took him so long?”
NightCrawler
Jake Gyllenhaal has been hitting a lot of cinematic homeruns recently and this is no exception. Set in nocturnal Los Angeles, he plays Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. The movie takes you journey through the cut throat world that is Nightcrawling and has moments that are seriously psychologically terrifying.
If you’re looking for a drama, that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this is for you.
Chef
Jon Favreau is a great writer/director who has done films like “Ironman”, “Cowboys & Aliens”, “Swingers” and even the holiday classic “Elf”, but this film is a change of pace for him. It has a small ensemble loaded with talent, it’s a simple story of father and son and food, Amazingly beautiful, wonderful food!
If you are a foodie, you’ll enjoy this visual feast. It left me hungry and in the mood for something from a food truck, The cherry on the top was the films soundtrack; it plays as a character throughout the entire film and helps tell the story as well.
The Wolf of Wall Street
“The Wolf of Wall Street” aka “The movie that I seriously thought would win Leonardo DiCaprio his first Oscar” is the mostly true story of Jordan Belfort a young, rich, party animal/stockbroker who has his life turned upside down, and pretty much every single direction in the process. If you’ve been living under a rock you probably haven’t seen this movie by now, but it’s honestly just way too good to leave off this list, Martin Scorsese does a phenomenal job, but do you expect from the guy who brought you classics like Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, King of Comedy and many more classics. The onscreen chemistry between Leo and Jonah Hill is remarkable, the writing is great, and the movie is 2 ½ hours of pure debauchery and insanity.
Django Unchained
Quentin Tarantino strikes gold once again with the highly provocative “Django Unchained”. Set in the South two years before the Civil War, The movie stars Jamie Foxx as Django, alongside Dr. King Schultz. After Schultz frees Django they seek out the South’s most wanted criminals together but Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing his wife Broomhilda after losing her to the slave trade long ago. Tarantino’s dark humor is in full effect in the film and despite so much controversy surrounding the graphic nature of the movie it was well received by fans and critics alike.
Black Or White
Black Or White is the story of a grandfather (Kevin Costner) who is suddenly left to care for his beloved granddaughter. When the little girl’s paternal grandmother (Octavia Spencer) seeks custody, a legal battle ensues that forces the families to confront their true feelings on race, forgiveness and understanding.
With all thats going on in the country its so easy to forget how the views on race truly affect our children. This movie brings that out front and center and shows about two families who under different circumstances wouldn’t interact or even acknowledge each other. Despite having to deal with their own issues they have to come together for the sake of a child that they both love and adore. Anchored by an all-star cast and based on real events, the movie is a look at two seemingly different worlds, in which nothing is as simple as black or white.

Pain & Gain
“Pain & Gain” follows a group of bodybuilders who engaged in a campaign of kidnapping, extortion and other crimes in beautiful Miami, Florida. This is Possibly one of my favorite Michael Bay movies of all time, it had me rolling and in tears a couple times, it’s so crazy how all this ACTUALLY happened, this isn’t one of those cases where people put “based on a true story” and only the names and city are the same, these fools actually did the stuff that happens in the movie.
Silver Linings Playbook
Silver Linings Playbook is an amazing movie that gives you a real life look into the world of mental illness. It follows the life of former teacher Pat Solitano who was just released from a mental institution after 4 years and moves back in with his parents. Soon after his arrival Pat tries to reconcile with his ex-wife but things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl that has many problems of her own. Wonderful directing and acting by the front runners lead this movie to the promised land in Awards season and even got the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role by Jennifer Lawrence.
PULP FICTION
Pulp Fiction……. I mean do we really need to say more? You’ve probably seen this movie 100 times, go ahead and give it one more go for old times’ sake. With so many iconic scenes there’s always a reason to revisit the Quentin Tarantino classic.
Dog Pound
One of the grittier movies I’ve ever seen, Dog pound follows the story of 17-year-old Adam “Butch” Butcher, charged with assaulting a corrections officer. If convicted, he faces hard time in an adult prison, but as witnesses emerge to support his claim of self-defense, Butch is told that with two weeks of clean behavior, he could be acquitted and released. Facing attacks from hardened criminals and ruthless guards, he finds he has to become vicious in order to survive. Dog Pound is a gritty and intensely emotional depiction of the dehumanizing effects of prison life, and how our correctional system can often feed the behavior it seeks to rehabilitate. It left me speechless at times and gave me a small yet really impactful glimpse of prison life as a teen.
Mississippi Damned
Mississippi Damned Takes place in two different times, in 1986 and in 1998. It’s based on a true story about three poor, black kids in rural Mississippi who reap the consequences of their family’s cycle of abuse, addiction, and violence. They independently struggle to escape their circumstances and must decide whether to confront what’s plagued their family for generations or succumb to the same crippling fate, forever damned in Mississippi. The trailer itself is enough to show you the rawness and realness of this movie, it’s Bitterly honest and profoundly subtle, writer/director Tina Mabry successfully captures growing up in a world where possibilities and opportunities seem to die in the face of the suffocating reality of physical and sexual abuse, obsession, and a myriad of destructive compulsions.
Gladiator
“ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!!!!!”
The words that have echoed thru modern pop culture and have been used as a meme for years! When this movie originally came out I was way too little to see it, but thanks to the memes and all the love surrounding the movie, “Gladiator” became one of the flicks that I knew I had to watch but couldn’t find the DVD thanks to blockbuster pretty much going under. So one day while scrolling thru Netflix I stumbled across this glorious Ridley Scott directed film and boy was I pleased! From start to finish I was satisfied with everything, the fight scenes were amazing, it made me gain a whole new level of respect for Russell Crowe’s Badassness, and now that I think about it I’m pretty sure the Spartacus TV Show drew a lot of its influences from this..
LUV
“Luv” is about the day in the life of woody, an 11-year-old boy who gets a crash course in what it means to be a man when he spends a day with the ex-convict uncle he idolizes who is played by Common, Usually when we think of Common we tend to think of a rap icon who can spin words into amazing stories, well this time he uses his amazing acting skills to tell the story. Common has dabbled in the world of film before, showing slightly different sides of him but hasn’t done anything like this. Just by looking at the trailer you can see that not everything goes as planned and they face trials & tribulations all while building a bond. Luv was honestly a pleasant surprise for me and was one of those flicks that really caught my attention just because Common was a part of it.
The Family
First of all, I seriously want to meet whoever casted this movie and shake their hand, because casting Robert De Niro as the lead character was an A M A Z I N G choice! The man has seriously played a mobster in like 95% of his movies and a crazy father in law in the other 5% (this is a huge exaggeration but it feels that way for sure). Him being the centerpiece was perfect and the pieces around him were just as good, his family is hilarious and downright wicked at points. The movie follows De Niro and his family all the way to small town in France as they hide from his former boss, who he ratted out for immunity (Vito Corleone would be ashamed!!!). Life in French paradise is compromised as the family can’t stay out of trouble and soon after insanity ensues.
The trailer shows a lot of great action scenes but the movie is hilarious and that’s what truly kept me locked in
Million Dollar Baby
This was my first introduction to Clint Eastwood, I remember being a kid and seeing this and instantly being like “man that old man is badass” I was completely unaware that he was the king of badasses, Dirty Harry himself. With that being said he also showed me that he was a badass director as well, when Million Dollar Baby first dropped, it mopped the floor with the competition at the Oscars, and for good reason. It was amazing in every way and left me speechless. I don’t want to give away too much of the story but this is one of the best films I’ve ever seen from start to finish.
Snow On Tha Bluff
Snow on Tha Bluff is another found-footage film that dives into one of Atlanta’s most dangerous hoods, “The Bluff”. When you watch this movie, you see it from Curtis Snow’s perspective, who’s a drug dealer & gangster who only knows the life he was born into. The film is unforgiving and relentless from the way the camera follows the action to the way its cut up. Granted some of it is fiction (a good chunk of it is in my opinion) but that doesn’t take away from what the movie portrays. Don’t judge it JUST based off the trailer and actually give a shot, there’s a good chance it’ll surprise you as much as the opening scene surprised me (Ps The opening scene scared the hell out of me).
The Wood
“The Wood” is Rick Famuyiwa’s debut as a Director & Writer, It’s a coming of age movie for its era, a lot like his most recent film “DOPE” (you can see a lot of similarities in the two movies)
One of my favorite aspects of this movie is the fact that the three characters’ from the hood aren’t: drug dealers, pimps, womanizing alcoholics, bums or whatever hood stereotype that some movies usually do .However, they are also not annoying goody two shoes. These three guys are real people with real problems. I’m not saying that the previously mentioned stereotypes don’t exist, but so many movies beat over the head with stereotypes and it’s good to see a director who makes great movie without them.
Varsity Blues
Varsity Blue wins two personal awards in my book
1.One of my favorite football movies of all time
2.One of the worst trailers I’ve ever seen
In all seriousness though, the trailer doesn’t do the movie any justice & if you haven’t seen it yet don’t judge it based off this car wreck of a trailer.
Being a former high school football player (Even though my experience differs) I can completely relate and appreciate what the core of this film is about, and that is the hereditary, obsessive behavior that peers and parents have towards their kids playing sports. The attitude of the players and coaches seem real. It’s a glimpse inside the fame Texas football attitude. Like a lot of the other movies in this list it has a good combination of humor and drama. If you enjoy high school themes like relationships and humor then you will probably love this film. And there is one more thing to love about this film, well two actually, if you are a guy that is Ms. Davis & Darcy Sears. That whip cream bikini is something I’ll never forget.
Beyond The Lights
Part love story, part drama, and all music industry realness, Beyond the Lights is like the modern day version of “The Bodyguard.”
“The story revolves around Noni and her love interest Kaz. “Kaz” helps “Noni” retreat from her controlling Momager (Mom/Manager for those who aren’t up on the lingo), the paparazzi, and the music industry to take some time to reflect upon where she came from until the very moment when her career took off. Its about Noni gaining the courage she needs to develop her own thoughts and voice which ultimately sets her free like a “Black Bird” to become the musical artist she was meant to be, instead of what others wanted her to be. As a guy I don’t watch a bunch of romance flicks, but this one is well worth the watch.
The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete
Oh Man “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete”. What can I say about such a beautiful film. It’s so moving and so gut wrenchingly realistic. It tug at so many of your emotions at once, it will leave you breathless. I recommend this film to anyone regardless of race or class because this story transcends all those lines.
P.S. Be sure to bring some tissue with you.
Warriors
“WARRIORS COME OUT TO PLAY!!!”
One of the most memorable quotes in cinema history.
In all honesty this movie never really caught my attention until 2005 when the video game adaptation for it came out. Before the game came out I knew I had to watch the movie and it got me. Still one of my personal faves.
To Kill A Mockingbird
75% are probably sick and tired of “To Kill a mockingbird” because you were forced to read the book and write 2000 word essay on it back in high school. I’m apart of 25% who absolutely loved the book and the movie instantly captured my vivid mind. Put this in the category of “Oldie But Goldie”.
Reservoir Dogs
Another Tarantino Film?
YES! Stop Hating!
The movie that started it all for Quentin (and possibly his most underrated)
If for some reason unbeknownst to me you haven’t seen this classic go ahead and watch it as I play a sad song for you on the world’s smallest violin
Jerry McGuire
I Spent 95% of my life not knowing what the hell people meant when they said “SHOW ME THE MONEY”
It wasn’t until early 2015 that I finally got around to watching “Jerry McGuire”(months after I added it to my watch list) and I was pissed that it took me so long to finally watch it! Another amazing sports movie that made gain a whole new level of appreciation for Tom Cruise & Cuba Gooding Jr. The guys will like it for the sports and the ladies will like it for the love.
Paranoia
Paranoia was an unexpected wonder for me, I recommend you don’t go watch the other trailers if you haven’t seen it yet cause most of them are WAAAAAAY to revealing and pretty much take away the surprise element, which is what kept me hooked on the flick.
Bronson
I did not know about this movie until I stumbled across it on Netflix but I am so glad I watched it. This is a fantastic depiction of Charles Bronson, born Michael Peterson, Britain’s most infamous and notorious prisoner. Director Nicholas Winding Refn invites us into Bronson’s imagination. The rest of the film is a dramatization of Bronson’s life and times in prison.
This is an excellent performance from Tom Hardy –funny, thoroughly engaging and intense. He physically transformed himself for this role and obviously studied Bronson vigorously to accurately portray his mannerisms.
Fruitvale Station
For a very long time Fruitvale Station was my favorite movie of all time. It’s absolutely beautiful in many ways but the most notably it shows a major problem that STILL plagues our country now. Police Brutality is major topic of conversation these days and the movie shows you it thru one side of spectrum. It’s a must watch if you haven’t seen it yet.
Cesar Chavez
“If we show the world their abuse, greed and brutality then our voice will be heard and responded to.” – Cesar Chavez
After being raised and working in the fields since he was 8 Cesar Chavez has seen enough of the abuse of the workers. After realizing nothing was going to change on its own he decides to step up and become a leader. His goal is to form a union and get every worker an honest wage. What seems like an easy thing to do is met with resistance from almost everyone. His non-violent protests slowly begin to become embraced by not only his fellow workers but American citizens as well. Not only is the movie very well made and acted it is also inspiring and you really become angry watching what the company he is protesting against does to discredit and discount his stance.
Batman Begins
Christopher Nolan changed the superhero game with his take on the caped crusader. Re-live the magic of seeing Kid Bruce Wayne becoming The Batman (or you can just laugh and/or cringe at the sound of Christian Bale’s gravelly whisper-shout for the first time).
Ps this movie released 10 years ago…let that settle in.
Killing Them Softly
“Killing Them Softly” is different from my typical choice of mob flicks. It slowed down the pace of dialogue scenes to a relatable and believable level, made the violence far more realistic and be summed up as hard-boiled; much of it can be defined by the difficult achievement of not falling into played out Hollywood clichés. There are no Schwartzenegger-style shoot outs, as the violence is usually sudden but brutal and loud. Every gunshot is closer to being as loud as real life, so you get a little jolt with every shot like being at a gun range. This is the sort of movie you could expect if the hero was removed and you only had the villains and thugs left over
