Since Lizzo’s first major hit, “Truth Hurts,” began bubbling in 2017 and blew up in 2019, she has become one of the biggest pop artists around.
It was featured on her third studio album Cuz I Love You, sandwiched between other chart toppers like “Juice” and the title track.
She followed it up —and recreated the magic— with the 2022 album Special which featured more catchy hits like the title track alongside “About Damn Time” and “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready).” And don’t forget the Cardi B-assisted “Rumors” around the same time, too.
As we await this year’s album, Love In Real Life, likely full of feel-good tracks, it’s vital to recognize Lizzo for something else synonymous with her brand: championing natural bodies.
It started with her appearing naked on the cover of Cuz I Love You, which her hairstylist Kendall Dorsey told The Cut was ” really about her exposing herself as a woman and just being fearless, free, and confident.”
While some would applaud her for confidently posing nude on an album cover, there’s one word she doesn’t want you to use to describe her body positivity: brave.
“I don’t like it when people think it’s hard for me to see myself as beautiful. I don’t like it when people are shocked that I’m doing it,” She told Glamour in 2019. “When people look at my body and be like, ‘Oh my God, she’s so brave,’ it’s like, ‘No I’m not. I’m just fine. I’m just me. I’m just sexy.’”
Lizzo blames the public’s opinion of body sizes on model culture, but is happy that social media is helping to flip the narrative.
“If you want to see somebody who’s beautiful who looks like you, go on the Internet and just type something in. Type in ‘thick thighs’ or ‘back fat.’ You’ll find yourself reflected. That’s what I did to help find the beauty in myself,” she added.
Lizzo’s mission hasn’t changed as she’s lost weight; it’s just evolved thanks to her taking a mental approach to getting into the gym, saying on TikTok, “Once I started working out for mental health… exercise has helped me shift my mind, not my body.”
Gym gains or not, Lizzo never shied away from a thirst trap. See some of her hottest social media moments below.
